Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2023: Ekadashi, which means “the eleventh day” in English, is celebrated on the eleventh day of each Hindu lunar fortnight. In the Hindu calendar, Vaikuntha Ekadashi, also called Mukkoti Ekadashi, occurs in the solar month of Dhanur. Drik Panchang states that Vaikuntha Ekadashi is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Ekadashi, one of two Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha Ekadashis in a month. On the day when Sagar Manthan occurred, people observed Vaikuntha Ekadashi. Hindu mythology states that the gods and goddesses shared the heavenly nectar on this auspicious day, which is known as Sagar Manthan.

Here’s all the information you need to commemorate Vaikuntha Ekadashi this year, as we prepare.

Date: Vaikuntha Ekadashi falls on December 23 this year. Drik Panchang states that Ekadashi Tithi will start on December 22 at 8:16 AM and finish on December 23 at 7:11 AM.

Significance: In Hindu mythology, on the auspicious day of Vaikuntha Ekadashi, the seas and oceans were churned to gather the heavenly nectar by Sagar Manthan. The gods and goddesses were then given the nectar. On Vaikuntha Ekadashi, we may purify our souls and fend off evils by keeping fast. Vaikuntha Ekadashi is also celebrated by Lord Vishnu’s followers.

Celebrations: Srirangam, Tamil Nadu, and Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, have lavish parties to commemorate Vaikuntha Ekadashi. Vaikuntha Ekadashi was held at the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati and the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam. Vaikuntha Ekadashi is an auspicious day in Tamil Nadu when the temples open their Parampada Vasal or the seventh doorway to heaven. It is advised to fast for two days straight on Ekadashi. Devotees who have families, however, should only fast on the first day. Sanyasis, widows, and those aiming for moksha should all follow the second-day fast.
