On the home ground of the Proteas, Team India will play South Africa in two Test matches. The first Test is slated to begin on boxing day.

The men in blue tied the T20I series and went on to win the ODI series 2-1 before playing the Test against the Proteas as the last leg of a multiformat tour to South Africa.

After losing at St. George’s Oval, KL Rahul led the ODI team that spectacularly ended the series with victories at Boland Park and the Wanderers.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who did not play in the T20Is or the ODIs, showered admiration on colleague KL Rahul ahead of the first Test, highlighting the attributes Rahul brings to the squad to Johannesburg.

The Indian captain said, “Very few players have just stuck to one position and played that position throughout their career. KL is one of them.”

“I think and feel that he performed well during the World Cup. Additionally, he has been putting in a lot of effort and is eager to take on that job.

Given Rahul’s consistency in the job, Rohit continued by saying that he looked forward to the luxury of having him play in the middle orders.

Thus, it allows us to play a strong hitter at any position—5, 6, 7, or whatever. He has the experience necessary to play under these circumstances. This was his 100th visit here. Despite having started the inning there, he will be batting in the middle order this time. However, we’ve seen that he does most of the tasks correctly while batting in restricted overs in one-day international cricket, Rohit said.

The Karnataka-born player’s grasp of the game and his ability to act as a balancer in the middle of the order were further praised by Rohit.

He is an excellent batsman and has a great understanding of the game. He is undoubtedly an accomplished player as well. He thus understands precisely what is needed at each point of the game. And that’s excellent because it puts an experienced player in the center, giving us a nice balance there.

In the next game against the hosts, Rohit also said that the 31-year-old star is excited to assume wicketkeeping responsibilities against the Proteas.

“As of right now, he’s eager to take on that role, but I’m not sure how long he wants to keep,” Rohit said.
