Hollywood Is Not Performing The “Cleanup” Following Harvey Weinstein’s Arrest, Says Susan Sarandon

Susan Sarandon, an established performer, recently appeared on a panel at 90s Con with Geena Davis and Mira Sorvino. The Oscar-winning actresses discussed how Hollywood treats women on Sunday. One of the first women to publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment in 2017 was actress Mira Sorvino, who said that turning down Weinstein’s approaches severely harmed her career. After winning the 1996 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for the movie Mighty Aphrodite, Sorvino claimed that her career took off. However, she quickly lost the opportunity to work with major studios.

“Harvey Weinstein stifled my career after I had a lot of wonderful offers,” stated Sorvino. So after 1998, I quit doing big-budget studio films. My career as a movie actress ended. She said that she worked on independent TV series and movies following that. Weinstein and Sorvino previously collaborated on movies such as Mimic (1997), Beautiful Girls (1996), and Blue in the Face (1995).

On February 23, 2023, Weinstein was found guilty of third-degree sexual misconduct and rape and given a 16-year jail term. Weinstein was a well-known movie producer prior to 2017. Miramax, his firm, produced many Oscar-winning movies.

Actress Susan Sarandon responded to Sorvino’s remarks by claiming that the film business has not gone far enough, especially in the wake of Harvey Weinstein’s arrest and the #MeToo movement that exposed other wealthy and influential individuals for sexual misconduct.

“I don’t think we’ve done the cleanup afterwards that we should be doing,” the 77-year-old actor remarked, advocating that those who helped Harvey Weinstein should be held responsible. I believe that not enough attention is paid to the equally culpable individuals who helped make it possible for the Harvey Weinsteins of the world to continue operating. They were aware of the reason they were checking guests into a hotel, yet they chose to ignore complaints.

Sarandon has already discussed how Hollywood encourages cooperation, which enables abusers to evade punishment.

In 2016, during a Q&A after the UK premiere of her documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr, Sarandon said, “Being intelligent is definitely not a must in my line of work.” Mediocrity reaps perpetual rewards. You are often employed due to your lack of curiosity.

“I don’t think we can judge someone or slut-shame someone for embracing their seductiveness,” she said. In order to avoid a scenario like to that of Harvey Weinstein, when your job is held hostage and you are pressured to do things you don’t want to do, you need, nonetheless, have enough authority and financial security to be able to say no.
